THE TONGUE: SO OFTEN IGNORED

28th March 2017 0

A large portion of the bacteria in the mouth builds up on the tongue. Use of a tongue cleaner provides in-depth cleaning and helps prevent halitosis.

Oral hygiene is often considered complete with toothbrushing and the use of tools including interproximal brushes, dental floss and tape, or oral irrigators, which remove oral biofilm build-up from between the teeth. But what about tongue cleaning?

It must not be forgotten that a large amount of bacteria in the oral cavity builds up on the tongue. It is very important to remove this layer of bacteria every day, along with food debris that may also linger there. This prevents the proliferation of malodorous gas (VSCs)-producing anaerobic bacteria, which cause oral halitosis.

The accumulation of bacteria which makes up part of the tongue coating is, in many cases, responsible for intra-oral halitosis. Its removal can greatly reduce the production of volatile sulphur compounds (up to 75% after one week of use(1)), which cause bad breath.

To eliminate bacterial build-up on the tongue, use of a tongue cleaner is recommended. This is suitable for those with bad breath as well as those who are seeking in-depth oral cleaning.

The tongue cleaner can reach the backmost part of the tongue where most bacteria build up, and its use requires some practice, as at first, it may cause gagging. However, over time this is usually overcome.

WHAT IS A TONGUE CLEANER?

It is made up of two edges, one which protrudes for cleaning the central depression of the tongue, and the other which is flat for cleaning the sides.

HOW TO USE THE TONGUE CLEANER?

1. Clean the central part of the tongue using the protruding edge of the cleaner. Hold the tongue cleaner by the handle so the protrusion faces down. Stick out your tongue and place the cleaner in your moth as far back as possible.

2. Pull the tongue cleaner toward the front of the mouth along the centre of the tongue. Rinse the cleaner with water.

3. Clean the sides of the tongue applying the flat edge of the cleaner. Rinse the cleaner after each sweep.
