During pregnancy, hormonal and physiological changes occur in women that can exacerbate minor complications in the oral cavity, such as, for example, gum disease. This is because during this period, there is an increase in vascular permeability, which leads to an increase in the transfer of periodontal pathogens from the tooth surface to the bloodstream (bacteraemia), as well as periodontal inflammatory mediators themselves, which end up spreading systemically⁽¹⁾. 

It is precisely the exacerbated gingivitis, known as periodontitis, which can be irreversible, causing adverse pregnancy outcomes including: preterm delivery, low birth weight or pre-eclampsia/eclampsia⁽¹⁾. 

For this reason, oral care before and during pregnancy takes on great importance for preventing the occurrence of gingivitis and its evolution to periodontitis.
